Nose: Plums, gingerbread with custard creams with hints of toffee.
Palate: Honey, very oily with all spice, brown sugar, cloves and a touch of cinnamon.
Finish: Warming ginger spice, lingering coffee beans and marzipan.
Glen Moray is thought to be an underrated malt. They must be doing something right because within four years they have tripled their capacity to 6.6 million litres of pure alcohol per year. There are plans to expand this to 9 million by installing up to 12 new stills to add to their current six. This will make it one of the biggest distilleries in Scotland.
Since 2008, when it was acquired by the French company, La Martiniquaise, its single blends have grown in range and in recognition. Much of the output goes to the blended whisky Label 5, which is one of the fastest growing whisky brands in the world.
A statistical anaysis of tasting notes by David Wishart of Edinburgh, shows that Glen Moray has the following flavour profile:
Light, Medium-Sweet, Low Peat, with Floral, Malty Notes and Fruity, Spicy, Honey Hints
This puts it in the same flavour cluster as Bladnoch, Bunnahabhain, Glenallachie, Glenkinchie, Glenlossie, Inchgower, Inchmurrin, Tomintoul. So if you like those, you'll probably like this.
